IVF Treatment

In this day and age, almost everyone has heard about in-vitro fertilization (IVF). But it was not a buzzword if we look around four to five decades back. It was known as “test tube babies,” and most people had no idea what this procedure is all about.

IVF is often confused with artificial insemination, where sperm is inserted into the uterus, and you may conceive almost naturally. On the other side, sperm and eggs are combined outside the body for pregnancy in IVF.

What is IVF?

IVF is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART). It involves retrieving egg from the women’s ovaries and fertilizing with partners sperms in the lab. And the fertilized egg(embryo) transferred into the uterus.

When should you visit the IVF Centre in India?

We have specialists who provide all the recommended support to people with infertility. IVF is probably the last procedure if all other treatments don’t work, such as IUI and fertility medications. What to Expect Before You Visit IVF Clinic?

The health of your uterus should also be tested at the IVF center in India. The doctor may perform an ultrasound consisting of intense sound waves to get an insight into your uterus. A scope is inserted into the uterus through the vagina to understand whether the uterus is healthy enough to place the embryos.

A sperm examination is recommended for your male partner. A semen sample is collected to analyze the size, number, and shape of sperm in a laboratory. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is a procedure recommended in case of damaged or weak sperm. We inject the sperm straight into the collected egg in this process.

Step-by-step

STEP 1:

Ovarian stimulation-it starts on day2 or day3 of cycle, where the women is asked to take hormonal injections for 9 to 10 days, depending upon her day2 scan and her basic hormonal blood test. here three to four follicular scans are done to check the follicular growth.

STEP 2:

Tigger shot-when the follicles are matured and ranging around 18 to 20mm in size, the trigger shot is given. Normally the trigger shot is given 34 to 36 hours before the egg retrieval.

STEP 3:

Egg retrieval-this is done under short general anaesthesia where the eggs are retrieved through a small needle under ultrasound guidance.

STEP 4:

Fertilisation- the retrieved matured eggs and semen sample are mixed in the IVF dish where the sperms enter naturally into the matured egg and fertilize it. The fertilised egg is allowed to grow in lab set up for three days to form an embryo.

STEP 5:

Embryo transfer and Implantation-the embryo is transferred into the uterus where the implantation occurs.

STEP 6:

Luteal phase-this is to support the implantation; patient is advised to take medications for 15 days after embryo transfer.

STEP 7:

Pregnancy test-15 days after the embryo transfer, by doing serum Beta HCG blood test the pregnancy can be confirmed.

What impacts IVF success rates?

Some of the main factors for IVF success are the age of the woman and the sperm quality. While younger women have higher chances of success, the chances reduce with age-related decline in the quality as well as the quantity of eggs.
