ICSI Bangalore

What is ICSI (Intra Cytoplasmic sperm injection)?

ICSI is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART). It involves retrieving egg from the women’s ovaries and fertilizing with partners sperms in the lab. And the fertilized egg(embryo) transferred into the uterus.

Infertility is a grave concern in this day and age. It affects around 26 million men and women in India. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is a treatment process for childless couples to conceive successfully. It is a substitute and an extension to IVF. The success rate of ICSI is also higher than IVF.

What is ICSI Treatment?

In this process, the sperm cell is injected internally into the egg’s cytoplasm. ICSI fertility treatment is highly recommended in severe male-factor infertility, and it is a specialized form of IVF. A chosen sperm is inserted into the mature egg directly. The retrieved eggs are mixed with the sperm of the male partner after stimulation, and this procedure goes hand in hand with IVF.

When is ICSI Treatment Required?

ICSI treatment in Bangalore is usually recommended to bypass the natural process of sperm traveling to the egg or going through the egg's outer shells. If male infertility factors are the cause, ICSI treatment is required. Here are some of these factors –

  • Poor semen motility
  • Low sperm count
  • History of the failed IVF procedure
  • Sperm not able to penetrate through the egg

The ICSI Process

STEP 1:  Ovarian stimulation-it starts on day2 or day3 of cycle, where the women is asked to take hormonal injections for 9 to 10 days, depending upon her day2 scan and her basic hormonal blood test. here three to four follicular scans are done to check the follicular growth.

STEP 2:  Tigger shot-when the follicles are matured and ranging around 18 to 20mm in size, the trigger shot is given. Normally the trigger shot is given 34 to 36 hours before the egg retrieval.

STEP 3:  Egg retrieval-this is done under short general anaesthesia where the eggs are retrieved through a small needle under ultrasound guidance.

STEP 4:  Fertilisation- In the ICSI process, a tiny needle, called a micropipette, is used to inject a single sperm into the center of the egg. once fertilization occurs, the fertilized egg (now called an embryo) grows in a laboratory for 1 to 5 days before it is transferred to the woman's uterus (womb).

STEP 5:  Embryo transfer and Implantation-the embryo is transferred into the uterus where the implantation occurs.

STEP 6:  Luteal phase-this is to support the implantation; patient is advised to take medications for 15 days after embryo transfer.

STEP 7:  Pregnancy test-15 days after the embryo transfer, by doing serum Beta HCG blood test the pregnancy can be confirmed.

What impacts IVF success rates?

Some of the main factors for IVF success are the age of the woman and the sperm quality. While younger women have higher chances of success, the chances reduce with age-related decline in the quality as well as the quantity of eggs.
